On behalf of Jill and myself, I am sad to report that this morning we had to put Hoss to sleep. He has had problems with his rear legs/hips for some time, but over the last few weeks has deteriorated quite rapidly.
It was sad to watch the front 75% of him acting normal while his rear legs were barely able to hold his weight. It was a tough decision to make, but any other decision would only have been selfishness on our part. Fortunately, we were able to spoil him rotten over the weekend and were there during his last moments.
I realize that the loss of a family pet pales in comparison to the loss of lives that occurred on September 11th, but that does not seem to make it any easier on us. He was a great dog, a large (no pun intended) part of our family over the past 9 years and will be greatly missed.

We realize the Bible is basically silent on where animals go when they pass, but we take comfort in knowing that God takes care of all of His creations. So, although it is not necessarily biblical, we like to think of Hoss (complete with his angel costume) running and playing with his 50 gallon plastic barrel "toy" like he used to.
